We know that a home waste disposal is a small appliance which is for getting rid of domestic garbage. But it does not mean that all kitchen garbage can be thrown in the home garbage disposal. Obviously there are some items cannot be put in it such as hard shells, big bones or grease and household oils etc. Today, we will tell you how to maintain household garbage disposal and what items cannot be put in the disposal in order to use properly and prolong the service life of food garbage disposal.
Maintenance suggestions
1. According to the garbage disposal horsepower, put only small quantities of food into the garbage disposal unit at a time. Large food scraps should be cut into smaller pieces before entering the disposal.
2. Never put anything down the disposal that is not food or water such as bottle caps, aluminum foil, and other non-food items, because these items can damage the disposal or get stuck in the plumbing piping.
3. When using the disposal, run water for approximately 30 seconds before you turn it off, so that food scraps will flow through the piping easily by pushing along by water. And cold water is better than warm water for this purpose because it will force fats and grease to congeal and harden, and allow them to move more easily through pipes. Of course, warm water can be run through the disposal while it is not in operation.
4. Ice can be used to clear off solidified grease and other debris from the blades of garbage disposal.
5. The kitchen garbage disposal should be used to grind only non-fibrous, leftover foods. If you cannot sure whether some items can be put in the disposal, you may put them in the trash, don’t put them in the disposal to avoid make it damaged.
6. Make sure you understand how to clean the garbage disposal properly and clean your garbage disposal regularly.
The following items should never be put in a disposal:
1. The items that are hard enough dull the blades, such as shells from shellfish or bones.
2. Don’t grind anything other than food scraps. Highly fibrous food such as corn husks, artichokes, pineapples, potato peels, asparagus, or celery etc. should enter a disposal only in small quantities or be thrown in the trash because these foods need to take a long time to grind and can clog the disposal or the plumbing.
3. Don’t pour grease or other fats down the disposal.
4. Don’t put anything metal, wood, or glass in the disposal.
5. Don’t dispose of cigarette butts in the household waste disposal.
Special reminder that a home food garbage disposal is for food scraps, but not large amounts of food. And different food waste disposal has different limit for the amount of household trash that must be taken away to waste management facilities. These items can also bring additional strain on septic systems, for this reason, you should follow the manufactures’ instructions. After all, each garbage disposal is different.
